I have found that authors can no longer turn up to a bookstore and sit at a table with pen poised over their books.
The reality is, potential buyers will probably walk past without a sideways glance. They need something to pique their interest.
Dress your table up with a theme from your book or just with a bright tablecloth; alternatively what about dressing yourself up (eg. costume period of the book). You can take along pop-up posters (sure to draw attention, such as Andy Semple’s see his website) or run a book trailer from your laptop. Even just a bunch of helium balloons beside the table will be sufficient. It doesn’t have to be expensive, just creative.
You want people to stop by and ask what you are doing at the store and then convince them to buy your book. Don’t be shy – talk it up.
Irena Thompson author of Snake in the Grass suggests mingling with the crowd (try rent-a-crowd) or having a friend with a basket of lollies etc. to hand out (people love freebies).
Props are great. Pat Noad author of the Annie Bryce mysteries sometimes has a severed hand on her table.
Don’t stay at the signing table. Walk around the store and ask buyers what they are looking for – again suggest your book.
Remember, you’ve put your heart and soul into your writing and now you need to do the same with your book signings or you won’t sell your beloved work.
Remain positive, smile and love your book, hopefully buyers will then love it as much as you do.

I’m really loving the theme/design of your site. Do you ever run into any browser compatibility issues? A few of my blog visitors have complained about my site not operating correctly in Explorer but looks great in Firefox. Do you have any suggestions to help fix this issue?
Hi Marilynn,
I use WordPress so you just need to go to WordPress help desk. If you’re not using WordPress and are still having difficulties you probably need to update your browser.
Would you be interested in exchanging links?

I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was curious what all is required to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very internet savvy so I’m not 100% positive. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Kudos
Just go to WordPress and start a blog for free. You can see my story on cheap blogs at: http://inkyfreshpress.com/2011/06/the-cheap-website-just-blog-it/. This should give you all the advice you need.

What is the difference between a Creative Writing major and a Creative Writing concentration?
Ji Robyn,
A Creative Writing concentration offers a sequence of workshops from introductory through advanced levels in both poetry and fiction. I believe a Creative Writing major is focussed on one aspect in particular, such as historical fiction. The best place to ask would be the universities who offer these courses.
Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
Hi,
I love all Apple. Best computers, best phone and some really good apps for writers. I have ibooks and read on my phone when I can’t get a book in my bag.
Really good blog you have got here. You will see me reading through your stuff often. Book marked!
Hi Jessie,
Thanks.
